4 Outfit Tips if You Aren't a Morning Person

By Madison White on March 3, 2020

For some reason, college time operates on a different level. While you may have been able to get up at 6:00 in the morning during high school, it will likely be a different story during college. 8:00am class? No problem. Or so you thought at the start of the semester. Getting up and getting to class, especially on frigid wintery mornings, can be a real struggle for many college students. However, you don’t have to sacrifice your style or your sleep entirely. With a little help, you’ll be rolling into your early classes on time and dressed to impress.

1. Oversized Sweater, Jeans, Sneakers

When it comes to morning dressing, when you have to choose between comfort and style you’re almost always going to choose comfort. Nobody wants to trek across campus in an uncomfortable outfit and be annoyed before class even begins.

The key to looking great and making dressing a lot easier is to have outfits that are both cute and comfortable ready to go. One of the easiest ways to look stylish and stay cozy is to pair a chic, oversized sweater with jeans and sneakers. It is casual, easy to walk in, and will keep you warm on those winter days.

Choosing the right pair of sneakers is what will really either elevate your outfit or drag it down. When it comes to making a great outfit, the shoes are always the key. Try opting for something classic like Converse or a sleek pair of Nikes. If anything, leave your worn-out, dumpy shoes in your dorm room and wear some with a little more flair.

Additionally, the little extra effort of choosing an oversized sweater over an old sweatshirt can make a world of difference. If you feel like even this outfit may be a stretch for you, try swapping out the jeans for some leggings for even more comfort without sacrificing too much style.

2. Relaxed T-Shirt, Flannel Shirt, Jeans or Shorts

An outfit that rarely goes out of style is the flannel shirt. While it really had its heyday a couple years back with the lumberjack phase, don’t think flannels are gone for good. A great, classic plaid flannel shirt will make you look both cool and stylish at the same time.

A great flannel shirt can be styled in a multitude of ways and is great for weather that may change throughout the day. You can simply wear the flannel shirt by itself or wear it over another t-shirt. Depending on how warm or cold it is, you can throw on a pair of jeans and you’re good to go. If it gets hot throughout the day, try just tying the flannel around your waist.

3. Monochrome or Neutral Color Palette

Something that keeps turning up on red carpets everywhere is monochrome color palettes, which means dressing completely or mostly in one color. It is most common to do this with colors that are a bit muted like white, black, or grey, but monochrome dressing can be done with any color. A bright, bold color will make for a real fashion statement. Also, be careful when dressing monochrome that your colors match up. You don’t want to pair pure black with faded black because it might look accidental and not intentional.

If monochrome is a little too out there for you, try just dressing in all neutral colors. By sticking with whites, greys, blacks, and tans, it is very difficult to mess up a look. These color combinations look sleek in almost any situation.

4. Any Outfit + A Great Pair of Loafers or Ankle Boots

As I said earlier, shoes can really make or break an outfit so I would recommend investing in a pair that looks sleek and will go with everything. Depending on your personal style, this could be a nice pair of tennis shoes, but if you’re looking for a more elegant look, try hunting down a great pair of loafers or ankle boots. I usually opt for a black leather shoe because it looks great with almost everything and will stand the test of time, but feel free to adjust this for your budget and wardrobe needs. These will be easy to throw on with any outfit and will make you look like you put more effort into dressing than you actually did.

A few simple tricks can take your personal style from frumpy to fabulous in just a couple easy steps. You don’t have to spend hours in front of a mirror trying to decide exactly what to wear each morning. A few adjustments to your wardrobe and knowledge of some key outfit combinations will make getting dressed in the morning a total breeze. So rest easy knowing that you can snooze a few times and still look great in class.
